Tillie reaches the Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti a little early, needing to center herself after the shock of seeing Frank’s photos. She gets lost only twice trying to find the place, not counting the numerous times she went astray earlier in the day, washing ashore like flotsam at La Giudecca and then at the Lido. While there, she spent some time haunting the shore, poking around in the debris, looking for objects she could use in her piece. Tillie had filled her net shopping bag with a star fish, its one eye staring up at her blankly; a doll’s plastic arm, the tiny fingernails painted scarlet; an old hardcover book, written in Italian, the pages waterlogged; a kaleidoscope, the lens broken; a piece of driftwood that resembles a Canadian beaver—or was it a muskrat? Found art.
